(KPL) At least 15 ongoing hydropower construction projects in the country are scheduled to be completed over the next five years (2016-2020), the government told parliament members on Tuesday.

Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr Somdy Douangdy, on behalf of the Lao government, presented the above mentioned target at the ongoing National Assembly session.

The fifteen hydropower projects include the US$3.8 billion Xayaboury Hydroelectric Power Project in Xayaboury Province which has a total installed capacity of 1,285 megawatts.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2019 with most of the electricity generated being exported to Thailand.

Meanwhile, the Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy Hydropower Project with total installed capacity of 410 megawatts is also expected to be completed in 2019.

The Xekhaman 1 hydropower project, which is expected to generate 322 megawatts, is scheduled to be completed later this year.  The Nam Ou Hydropower Project, which is expected to generate 240 megawatts, is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2017.

By 2020, the government plans to have electricity available for 95 per cent of total households.

The reason that the Lao government has chosen hydropower over other ways of producing energy is because hydropower is reliable, clean, has zero-carbon-emissions, is affordable and renewable, and will not pollute the environment or the water.
